What is the difference between nectar and juice?

What is the difference between nectar and juice?

Juice is pure liquid, typically squeezed, from fruits or vegetables where nectar is juice with additives, sugar water for example, i.e. nectars are only required to have a certain minimum content of juice.
The decision as to whether a particular fruit is made into a juice or nectar depends on its acidity content and the amount of its fruit flesh. Exact details about its fruit content are indicated on the bottle label.

Statutory minimum fruit content for nectars (Germany):
between 25 and 50% depending on the fruit. The following criteria are used for specifying the fruit content:
  1. Fruits with juice suitable for immediate consumption: at least 50% (i.e. apples and oranges)
  2. Fruits with acidic juice that are not suitable for immediate consumption: between 25 and 50% depending on the juice (i.e. limes, blackberries and blackcurrants)
  3. Fruits with low acidity content or too much fruit flesh: between 25 and 35% (i.e. bananas and mangos)
